Well it certainly has shaped up to be a busy September. After a long week of covering the happenings of MSFW, I headed off to board the plane bound for the USA…….first stop…..LA!
It was Friday morning when I landed and I couldn’t wait to get to my home away from home, The Roosevelt Hotel. Tired and feeling the jet lag, I spent most of the day lazing by the pool cocktails in hand. Just a spot of R & R in the sun before the hectic schedule that would fill the rest of my trip.
That night feeling refreshed, I headed out to dinner with my friends to plan our days ahead. On the Saturday, we had planned some editorial photo shoots for Sushi Radio and later APL Photography had been invited to the Sushi Radio Mansion Party, to photograph the event ……..What an honour.
Saturday, an early start….my travel and work companion on this trip, Steve Carey and I met for breakfast and raced off to our editorial photo shoot. I still don’ understand how people in LA put up with terrible coffee. The shoot is successful and after a short rest and a change into something more suitable, I arrive at the mansion on Sunset Boulevard and the LA glamour set were out in force. The Sushi Radio party itself was headlined by the Stafford Brothers and the party was buzzing with energy. LA at is best and it was a very long but fun night.
Sunday morning came around very fast ….in fact Saturday was one of those sleepless nights…..off to the Airport for the next leg of our trip …..the great New York and New York Fashion Week.
Landing on a warm, dry day, a waiting town car whizzed me to my NY home…..60 Thomson, in Soho. As has become a bit of a tradition…I am upgraded to a suite …..grand living in this great city. I have a little mooch around and a spot of lunch…New Yorkers are a funny lot….they are very preoccupied with being New Yorkers…which I suppose is their appeal.
Sunday night was a night out with mates again. On the recommendation of man about town, John Curtin, we headed to Lavo Italian Restaurant and Nightclub. This new hip venue is from the creators of the famous nightspot Tao…..What an amazing place….amazing decor, food, full of beautiful people and great ambience. It is typical, great New York style with a touch of ‘The Great Gatsby’ influence
Monday morning and I was up and feeling excited…It’s NY Fashion Week.
I am armed with all my trade tools, my cameras…ready to make APL Photography do proud. In fact we did really well ……we shot celebs galore, and that before heading to the DKNY after-party where I lost count of how many celebs I shot. The party itself was great….slick, stylish and full of beautiful people.
Day 2 of fashion week was a scorcher….the humidity set in ….yet work…work…work….NY stops for no man or nature. I race around shooting five runways shows and two after parties….it’s a long day….and even I, with all my energy …am feeling a bit exhausted.Though this night I decided to visit Beauty and Essex, the ultra hip and happening restaurant bar in the Lower East Side. What an amazing place….it actually is mind-bogglingly incredible….amazing fit out, unbelievably good food and cocktails and everywhere you look, the joint is brimmed with celebs and really amazing looking people….they even have a dress code that suggests you wear ‘upscale casual attire’. It was a great way to end my last night in New York.
Day 3 pretty much followed the same rhythm, this time 4 runway shows and 1 after party and it also happened to be my last day for this trip. Five days had vanished very quickly. I decided I’d rest and just play tourist after shooting my last engagement. Some shopping mainly clothes, books and ‘Terry Richardson’ inspired sunglasses. I decided to wander and take in some of the places in NY I hadn’t seen before. The evening arrives and it’s time to leave 60 Thomson, to make my way to the airport to come home.
